Healthcare Technology, Medical AI
Sina Bari MD is a Stanford-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has established himself as a respected medical technology and artificial intelligence figure. His path to medicine and innovation was shaped by personal experiences early in life. After losing his father at eight, he began helping his mother translate her computer science textbooks into English. This sparked a strong interest in programming, and by high school, he had gained advanced knowledge in UNIX networking and created biological simulation software using early parallel supercomputers. Working in the IT field helped support his education during his undergraduate studies and medical school. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 2000 and completed his medical degree in 2006 at Stanford University School of Medicine. He was selected as one of three individuals for a competitive, accelerated plastic and reconstructive surgery residency program at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. During his training, he participated in the Stanford Bioinnovation program, where he contributed to developing medical devices designed to lower infection risks in peritoneal dialysis.
In January 2022, he became the Senior Director of Medical Artificial Intelligence at a technology company after having led the creation and growth of this division over the previous three years. Under his leadership, the division achieved over $4 million in annual recurring revenue. His work involves developing large-scale datasets annotated by human experts to train neural networks, supporting improvements in radiology, robotic surgery, drug safety, endoscopy, and other areas. His background as a clinician continues to influence his focus on improving patient care while his technical expertise enables effective, scalable solutions.
Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Innovation Officer at a healthcare technology firm, where he helped develop AI-driven tools in specialties such as dermatology, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology. His post-residency surgical work began with the Veterans Administration in Palo Alto, followed by a role as a plastic surgery consultant in private practice. His academic background also includes experience working as a web architect while pursuing his education.
He now oversees a team of more than 500, guiding the entire process from early product development to final implementation. In 2022, the division he led was independently recognized as the top provider of healthcare data services. His leadership approach—shaped by clinical experience—emphasizes reliability, attention to detail, and clear communication. He has presented at industry conferences, contributed to medical journals, and co-authored chapters in surgical textbooks. Over the years, he has received awards in plastic surgery research, business leadership, and science competitions.
Sina Bari MD continues to lead at the intersection of healthcare and technology, bringing together deep clinical insight and technical knowledge to advance medical artificial intelligence.

A Conversation with Sina Bari MD: Real Talk on AI in Hospitals
Sina Bari, MD, examines the practical challenges of ambient AI scribes, which aim to reduce physician burnout by automating documentation. While promising, these tools often oversimplify detailed medical language, overlook significant patient concerns in multilingual conversations, and fail to incorporate context from prior visits, thereby limiting their effectiveness in genuine care settings. Bari emphasizes that to benefit patient care, these systems need clinician-guided data, stronger contextual understanding, and human oversight to bridge the gap between current capabilities and clinical needs.
